While European brands have recently been criticized for their technical backwardness, Peugeot presents an interesting surprise. At the beginning of next year, it will start selling the new generation type 3008 with an electric drive and a range of up to 700 kilometers. Only luxury class cars reach this value so far. Peugeot leaves behind all competition, including Tesla.
Few would expect such a piece from Peugeot. Director Carlos Tavares is among the most vocal critics of the hasty retreat from fossil fuels. So far, the model range has been electrified rather cautiously, and the brand with the lion in its emblem has been riding in the middle of the peloton.
Until now, the Stellantis group has only electrified combustion models with only the most necessary interventions in the bodywork, which was reflected in the limited battery capacity: 50 kilowatt hours in the e-208, e-308 and e-Rifter models, 75 kilowatt hours in the Traveler van.
But with the type 3008 comes a change. The completely new STLA platform was developed for electric drive from the start and opens up new possibilities in the area of the battery. Choose between batteries with a usable capacity of 73 and 96 kilowatt hours.
The second of them raises the bar for the lower middle class. Even higher category cars such as Mercedes-Benz EQC or Volkswagen ID.7 do not offer such a high capacity.
The body of the SUV fastback with a flowing rear achieves relatively favorable aerodynamics and contributes to low energy consumption from 13.7 kWh/100 km. This means a range of up to 700 kilometers.
The Škoda Enyaq 82 reaches 560 kilometers in the mildest conditions of the WLTP cycle, Tesla Model Y Log Range 533 kilometers, Toyota bz4X 500 kilometers. Peugeot’s strong rival is growing at home in France. The Renault Scénic E-Tech can travel 620 kilometers with an 87 kilowatt-hour battery.
Despite the completely new architecture, the familiar features of the Peugeot 3008 remain with an aggressive front, the mask with a three-dimensional illusion is complemented by the triple diode claws of the daytime running lights. The cabin retains the controversial i-Cockpit layout with a small steering wheel and high-mounted instruments. The interior is now dominated by large curved displays.
The STLA architecture will be shared by European and American brands of the Stellantis group. It is developed in four sizes. The first for small cars, the Peugeot 3008 uses the Medium variant, the third for high-end cars and the fourth for frame chassis.
