PEUGEOT presents new hybrid technology

2023 will be the “electric year” for PEUGEOT, when new models and new technologies will be presented. It will also include the new hybrid system developed by the Stellantis Group, which will be offered on the PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008 models, before being available on other models as well.

It will complement the already wide range of electrified engines, including plug-in hybrid, 100% electric and fuel cell system model variants.

The hybrid system of the PEUGEOT 48 V consists of a new generation 136 hp PureTech petrol engine connected to a new 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox that includes an electric motor. Thanks to a battery that charges while driving, this technology provides additional torque at low engine speeds and reduces fuel consumption by up to 15% (from 126 g CO2/km in the 3008 model and from 128 g CO2/km in the 5008 model).

Simple operation

The driver is informed of the operation of the hybrid system via the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® and the various modes can be activated automatically. During everyday driving, the internal combustion engine and the electric engine work together or separately to optimize energy consumption.

During strong acceleration, the electric motor provides additional torque to the gasoline engine at low revs. During braking, the petrol engine disengages and the electric motor becomes a generator to charge the 48V battery.

Only with the electric engine in emission-free mode, the car drives in the city for short distances and during maneuvers.

Tangible benefits

Compared to a non-electrified gasoline engine with similar technical characteristics, the hybrid engine in the C-segment SUV (WLTP combined cycle) provides an average fuel saving of approximately 1 liter per 100 km. This saving is mainly achieved in the city (-2.5 l/100 km) and on the road (-0.7 l/100 km), while consumption on the highway remains unchanged. These figures mean that the CO2 emissions of the 3008 and 5008 models are reduced by an average of 20 g/km (in the WLTP combined cycle).

When the battery charge level allows it, the hybrid system allows you to start, maneuver (for example, to park) and drive at low speed in heavy traffic in 100% electric mode. When driving in the city, the PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008 HYBRID can drive in 100% emission-free electric mode more than 50% of the time.

At higher speeds (up to 145 km/h), the internal combustion engine switches off when the driver releases the accelerator pedal at steady speed and during the deceleration phase. When medium-intensity acceleration is required, the electric motor provides additional torque with a single pulse that compensates for the turbine’s response time. This avoids shifting gears and provides greater driving comfort and dynamics.

On the other hand, when the driver fully presses the accelerator pedal, the electric engine provides an additional 9 kW (approximately 12 hp) of power.

Modern hybrid system

All the components that make up the new engine are located under the hood. The exception is the 48 V battery, which is installed under the front left seat on PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008 models. The system consists of a new generation 1.2-liter PureTech gasoline engine, specially designed for optimal integration with the hybrid system. It delivers 136 hp (100 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 230 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm.

Better engine performance is achieved with a variable geometry turbocharger.

The hybrid system includes a new, electrified 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox that works without torque interruption and has been specially developed for hybrid systems. The gearbox housing also houses the electric motor, inverter and electronic control unit, thus optimizing the internal dimensions and weight of the car, guaranteeing excellent driving characteristics.

The permanent magnet synchronous electric motor built into the gearbox develops a maximum power of 21 kW (28 hp) and a torque of 55 Nm. This allows the car to be powered 100% electrically when low torque is required and helps the internal combustion engine to reduce its consumption.

It also provides primary starting for the internal combustion engine with the help of a belt starter. This 48V powered starter allows you to restart an internal combustion engine using a belt. It provides fast and reliable startup.

The 48 V lithium-ion battery has a gross capacity of 898 Wh and an available capacity of 432 Wh. It is designed to maintain a constant level of performance throughout the life of the car and is backed by a manufacturer’s warranty of 8 years or 160,000 km.

The 48 V battery is mounted under the front left seat. This arrangement offers many advantages compared to the space under the rear seats and means that the entire cabin space is fully accessible, the full trunk capacity is preserved, energy losses related to the length of the cables are optimized, and thanks to the correct mass distribution (the battery is located in the center of the car) , driving dynamics are preserved.

Special hardware

PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008 have two electrical networks. A low-voltage 12 V network that supplies the car’s equipment and a high-voltage 48 V network that supplies the hybrid system. Electricity is produced only by the 48 V e-motor. A DC converter is used to transfer the produced electricity to the car’s 12V network.

PEUGEOT models equipped with the new hybrid engine have a special display. The digital display shows 100% electric driving (speedometer in blue), energy flow in the system, battery charge level, its operating status via a power meter (Charge, Eco, Power) and the percentage of distance traveled in electric mode at any time or at the end of the trip .

In addition, these models will be equipped with AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System), which emits sound signals at speeds of up to 30 km/h to warn pedestrians and cyclists of an approaching car.

Coming soon to all models

This hybrid engine replaces the PureTech 130 EAT8 and will soon be available in other models in the PEUGEOT range, namely the 208, 2008, 308, 308 SW and 408.

The PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008 HYBRID will be manufactured at the Sochaux plant in France and will go on sale in Europe in the second quarter of 2023.
