Peugeot and Opel have started production of a hydrogen van

The Stellantis Group’s electrical supplies have been on the market for some time, and now their hydrogen alternatives are beginning to emerge. Peugeot has launched production of the e-Expert Hydrogen model in Hordain, France, and will deliver the first car to the customer before Christmas. The carmaker stated this in a press release.

According to Linda Jackson, CEO of Peugeot, hydrogen technology is very important for the light commercial vehicle market. “Hydrogen fuel cell technology allows for intensive daily use without recharging, which is a crucial advantage for professional drivers who have to drive several hundred kilometers on the highway in a single day and then drive to city centers where emissions restrictions apply,” he says.

Hydrogen refueling takes a few minutes, it works like CNG.

As with the battery versions of the Stellantis vans, Peugeot’s solution has no negative effect on cargo space. According to the carmaker, there is enough hydrogen for a range of about 350 km; the tanks have a capacity of 4.4 kg of hydrogen at a pressure of 700 bar.

The car also has a 10.5 kWh battery, which can be recharged from the mains with an output of up to 11 kW, which is not common in hydrogen cars. It is up to 50 km away. The payload is up to 1100 kg and the weight of the towed trailer is 1000 kg.

Both the e-Expert Hydrogen and the Opel Vivaro-e Hydrogen, introduced a few days earlier, have an electric motor with a maximum output of 100 kW, ie 136 hp. This is common to the battery versions of these vans. The fuel cell gives a maximum of 45 kW; when more power is required, the car draws electricity from a battery, which it recharges in addition to the socket, of course, also when decelerating or driving downhill.

Neither the Czech nor the French Peugeot website yet shows the e-Expert Hydrogen award, just as Opel does not yet offer the Vivara-e Hydrogen award. However, it is not necessary to rush too much, as the first public hydrogen filling stations in the Czech Republic will not open until next year.
