Peugeot 2008: New Design and Upgrades, Including Electric Variant

What has changed

Four years after the market launch of the second generation, the Peugeot 2008 is renewed: the design is not distorted, but, especially at the front, they arrive several novelties for the headlights (with new position lights made up of three vertical LEDs) and for the grille, with the new Peugeot emblem and side inserts that make it appear larger. Detailed changes also in the rear area where the design of the lights changes, no longer made up of three vertical lights, but by new horizontal “bar” elements. L’cockpitAlways very originalespecially in the design of the dashboard, has remained essentially unchanged, but now – standard on all versions – there is a multimedia system with a 10” touch screen with wireless connections to smartphones via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The electric has a new heart

The changes to the current variant are much more substantial Peugeot e-2008: the battery has grown in capacity to 48.1 kWh (actually usable) and under the hood there is a new electric motor. It is the same drive from 156 CV and 260 Nm of torque that equips several recent models of the Leone and the entire Stellantis group such as the Peugeot e-308 and the Jeep Avenger. It has 20 horsepower more than the previous 136 HP e-2008 (which remains on the list at 1,500 euros less with the same set-up) and promises greater efficiency. When driving, this extra power is not immediately noticeable – only in Sport mode does the engine deliver its maximum horsepower -, but the performance is more than adequate for the type of car (“0-100” in 9.1 seconds and 150 km/h top speed) and the starting point is not lacking in the shots.

It goes further

Impossible to draw conclusions on the autonomy in the few hundreds of kilometers traveled at the wheel of the Peugeot e-2008, but the first information collected by the car’s trip computer is interesting: despite the intense use of the air conditioning due to the high ambient temperatures (about 38°) and numerous fast-flowing stretches of road, the indicated consumption was close to 6 km/ kWh, for a total range of more than 300 kilometres. In more favorable conditions, according to the Wltp combined cycle, 406 kilometers can be covered between one “full tank” and the next against the 340 kilometers declared by the 136 HP version. Unchanged compared to the past ways and timing of recharge: the Peugeot e-2008 accepts alternating current up to 7.4 kW as standard (the 11 kW charger is an option) and direct current from the super-fast columns up to 100 kW, enough to go from 20 to 80% of the battery in about half an hour.

A valid crossover (even for four)

Driving, the Peugeot e-2008 confirms all the advantages of the pre-restyling version: ride comfort is high, the suspension absorbs the roughness of the road surface well, without being compliant to the full advantage of stability. The steering control, light, is sufficiently precise and becomes a little more consistent in Sport mode. The silence is remarkable even at motorway speeds where there is not too much rustling. L’cockpit is crafted with care: it is solid in the assemblies and spacious. There is no shortage of centimeters even for those sitting on the sides of the sofa for both the head and the legs. It’s just a pity that the limited travel of the steering wheel in height forces you to find some compromises in the driving position and that the central console steals some ease from the fifth passenger. The trunk is roomy and has regular shapes: the bottom can be adjusted to two heights, but there are no bag hooks and the side parts of the compartment are covered in hard plastic.

How much does it cost

The price list of Peugeot 2008 updated starts at 25,850 euros for the internal combustion engine variants and 38,150 euros for the electric e-2008 with 136 HP. For the test version with 156 HP and the new battery pack it costs at least 39,600 euros which becomes 41,900 euros for the richest GT version. The latter offers a lot as standard: from the digital dashboard to the rear view camera via the full LED headlights. Too bad, however, we still have to put our hands on the wallet for some important features such as the 11 kW on-board charger (400 euros), the adaptive cruise control (300 euros) and the navigator (400 euros).

In our opinion

PLEASE
> Comfort. Potholes and manholes are properly filtered. The silence is also good
> Finishes. The cabin is made with care: there are materials that are soft to the touch
> Guide. Without being stiff, the suspension ensures remarkable composure when cornering. The electric motor, then, offers a great fluidity of movement.

DEFECTS
> Endowment. The top-of-the-range GT trim level offers a lot as standard, but some of the most important accessories are paid for separately, such as the 11 kW charger, navigator and adaptive cruise.
> Driving position. The limited travel of the steering wheel in height forces some compromises, especially for taller riders.
> Fifth place. It is not very wide and offers little foot and leg room.
