Petter Northug (37) has a new project underway. He has given himself three years to succeed.

Petter Northug (37) becomes the athletic director of his own cross-country team. Northug’s goal is to stand on the podium in a cross-country race within the next three years. Northug returned as a cross-country runner last season, five years after his last World Cup race. Northug is looking for more runners for their new team, preferably young runners between 20 and 25 years of age. view more

Petter Northug is back. Now as a sporting leader and the biggest star on his own long-distance team. Within three years, he will stand on the podium in a long-distance race. Preferably more. Preferably many.

– I have to raise myself two or three notches. The capacity is too poor. I remember how the body was at its best, says Northug to VG.

He says that the core muscles must improve and he must become faster. The 37-year-old is tenacious in striking.

– I am motivated to attack now, says Northug.

Do you think Petter Northug will win the Vasaloppet before he is 40?

When the 37-year-old returned as a cross-country runner last season, it was exactly five years since he ran his last World Cup race. Now it’s all about the long run.

– This is my last chance on the podium. I’ll give it a try. Last season it was 5th place. I will be much better in two years. For the team, it is the Vasaloppet that applies. It is our WC, says Northug.

Did you know that Northug has also been involved in biathlon? Here he was in Swedish uniform last year:

He thrives as a long-distance runner. The body responds. Last season, Northug took 5th place in Grönklitt’s ski marathon, but it was 48th in Vasaloppet and 36th in Marcialonga. Now the list has been raised.

During the Blinkfestivalen two weeks ago, he came third in the 50 kilometer long roller ski race. Andrew Musgrave won. Northug was ahead of Johannes Høsflot Klæbo in the 15 kilometer joint start in Sandnes. Northug is back to win.

– That’s where you have to be for it to be fun, anything else is just annoying, then there’s no point in being involved, says Northug to VG.

VG got a tanned and laid-back 37-year-old on video link on Tuesday afternoon. The next test is Top Sports Week. On Wednesday there is a 54 kilometer roller ski race at Hitra. There can be more races if the body wants.

One of the signings on Northug’s new team is Joar Thele (30), who finished sixth at the Vasaloppet in March, and Italian Alessia De Zolt Ponte (23). Northug hopes to make room for a few more, preferably young promising runners between the ages of 20 and 25. The 37-year-old says that the financing for a team in the long-distance Ski Classics series is in place. The coming Ski Classics season ends with Northug’s own “Janteloppet”.

– I will have the sporting plan where I use experience and knowledge. I know a little about making mistakes and doing things right. I hope the runners will use me as an adviser. I will be firm and clear. I have to be in control, says Northug enthusiastically with a big smile, as he nibbles on what looks like an energy bar in the video image.

But even though he is in his best shape for many years and trains better than for a long time, he has no hidden agenda or dream of standing on the starting line at the WC in Trondheim in a year and a half.

– My chapter with the WC and the Olympics is over. I have changed my training. You train in a completely different way with long-distance running. World Cup cross-country skiing gets worse and worse with every stake ride I take, says Northug and laughs.

Top sports week continues with sprints in Aure on Thursday, before ending in Granåsen on Friday and Saturday.
