He was a star in the Norwegian cross-country skiing scene, but had legal problems because of alcohol. Now Petter Northug confesses: “I have a serious problem with intoxication”.

Norway’s former cross-country star Petter Northug has admitted problems with intoxicants on allegations of drug possession and driving too fast. “I have a serious intoxication problem consisting of alcohol, narcotics and pills in connection with hard partying at times,” said the 34-year-old on Friday at a press conference in Trondheim. He was not the role model he would have wished to be. He has reached the lowest point of his life and asked for professional help.

Post-retirement drug problems

According to the police, the former professional athlete drove at a speed of 168 kilometers per hour through a 110 km / h zone in southeastern Norway. He was stopped at a speed control and temporarily arrested. He was later released. Northug ended his career in late 2018 and has been working as a TV commentator ever since. The police has made allegations of frenzy, intoxicant driving and drug possession against him.

Northug said he never touched drugs in his active athletic career. After the end of his career, the problems with drugs gradually increased. He tried cocaine for the first time in the winter of last year. During his active career, Northug had had legal problems because of an alcohol drive.
