In France pricing is in principle free. There are differences per department and region. “As a rule, the closer gas stations are to each other, the lower the prices are, simply because of the competition. In sparsely populated areas or on highway sections with few stations, they are higher because motorists often have no other alternative than to refuel there,” says Maarten Matienko of VAB.
Current gas prices on the highway can be quite high. For example, you currently pay 2.076 euros per liter on the A1 from Lille to Paris at Phalempin station, more than in Belgium. On the A16 in Dunkirk (towards Calais), the price even rises to 2,119 euros. In this way, the pump operators partly recover the high concession prices that they have to pay to the French highway manager.
