Petrol prices are likely to break a new record on Wednesday. That is what UnitedConsumers told NU.nl on Tuesday. The consumer collective does not yet have all the data, but for the time being it looks like we will pay 2,504 euros for a liter of petrol on Wednesday.
The reduction in excise duties on fuel that the cabinet introduced on 1 April has been able to keep prices slightly lower for two months, but the effect of this now seems to have almost disappeared. On Wednesday, a liter of petrol will probably cost 2.504 euros, which is just above the previous record of 2.502 euros per liter.
Currently, the Dutch pay 2,500 euros for petrol and 2,189 euros for diesel. The diesel price also goes up, but does not reach a new record. A liter of diesel will probably cost 2.221 euros from Wednesday.
Fuel prices peaked earlier on March 10. At that time, petrol cost 2.502 euros per liter and diesel 2.375 euros. On April 1, petrol became 20 cents cheaper and motorists paid 10 cents less for diesel.
With this reduction in excise duties, the government wanted to make the consequences of high inflation bearable for households. But due to oil shortages and uncertainty about supplies from Russia, the oil price continues to rise daily. Now that the European Union has imposed a partial ban on Russian oil, that price is expected to continue to rise.
One bright spot: not all gas stations have to adhere to the recommended prices of oil companies. These prices mainly apply to gas stations along the highway. In other places you usually pay less.
