President Gustavo Petro went this Sunday to the island of San Andrés to assess the conditions in that island territory, after the passage of the tropical storm Julia, on Saturday night.
“They are the San Andres Islands, I have evaluated the damage and above all the prevention and resilience system of the island”, comments the president through his Twitter account.
His arrival on the island took place around one in the afternoon this Sunday. Traveling with Petro were the health ministers, Carolina Corcho; Housing, Catalina Velasco and Environment, Susana Muhamad, as well as the director of the Risk Management Unit, Javier Pava, among other officials.
The president visited the most affected areas where he listened to social leaders and local authorities to establish a plan to address immediate and short-term needs.
Susana Muhamad, Minister of the Environment, stressed that this portfolio will work together to provide solutions that contribute to the rehabilitation of ecosystems.
“One of the first actions focuses on research institutes in the environmental sector, which will accompany the diagnosis of the impact on island ecosystems (mangroves, coral reefs, seagrasses, tropical dry forests and stretches of water of the island)”, he commented. Muhammad.
In addition to this diagnosis, the effectiveness of the measures taken with Iota will be assessed and a working group will be established to advance climate resilience issues on the island.
The government instead reported that CATAM, with the support of the Air Force, “is preparing the transfer of the Emergency Humanitarian Assistance to assist the communities of La Guajira that have been hit by heavy rain caused by the passage of the Tropical Storm Giulia.
