In his first speech from the World Economic Forum, President Gustavo Petro urged that all nations must move from ‘speech to practice’ and take action to confront the climate crisis.

The head of state noted that “Colombia has been defending, since my government, the possibility of solving the climate crisis through a leap in the conception of humanity in relation to nature, in relation to its planet.”

Petro indicated that these measures “They imply undoubtedly profound political changes, transformations of society and its conception,” which is why he assured that “Colombia, for example, has decided not to contract more oil, gas and coal exploration.”

The president reiterated that Colombia’s decision not to explore more carbides in general is made “as a demonstration effect on the need we have for coal in our global economy,” which “would be much more complex in countries like the United States, those of the European Union or China.”

“But, additionally, we want to show alternative forms of meaning of life, of intensity of life in a decarbonized world and that possibility is, precisely, in the relationship with nature,” he added.
