Petro declared an economic and social emergency for La Guajira • La Nación


From the department of La Guajira, the president reiterated that a drought is coming that the department has never seen before and measures must be taken.

President Gustavo Petro made official the declaration of an economic and social emergency in this territory, to face a looming drought that the country has never seen.

“After being discussed among jurists, among members of the Government with you, I believe that it is absolutely pertinent to decree the economic and social emergency because a public calamity is looming,” said the president from Riohacha.

“We have a public calamity that has even been declared by the Constitutional Court itself, a threat of worsening from the congruence between rising climate crises and the El Niño phenomenon,” complemented the Colombian president.

On the other hand, the Head of State announced that the National Government with an emergency decree “It will set up 300 extramural health teams, that is, health teams that can cover the entire Guajiro territory to visit house by house, ranch by ranch, ranch by ranch.”

The president was accompanied by Vice President Francia Márquez and a large part of the ministerial cabinet who have already completed four days in the department.
