Petro apologizes on behalf of the State for the victims of femicides in Colombia

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has apologized on behalf of the State “for not acting with the appropriate speed” in cases of femicides in the country within the framework of International Women’s Day.

In his statements on public television, he expressed his condolences to the relatives of Diana Carolina Serna, who was murdered in January on the street in the city of Valle del Cauca, as reported by the newspaper ‘El Espectador’.

Petro has assured at the beginning of his statements that “the Government’s commitment must be irrevocable, addressing the needs of all women, peasant women, poor women, Afro women, indigenous women, women trans and addressing the diversity of realities itself.

For this reason, he has asked that all entities of his Government be committed to “the popular and feminist mandate”, referring to the gender violence that women face and has referred to the weight of caring for the home and work overload. , psychological and financial in the case of single mothers.

In this sense, Petro has indicated that his Government has prioritized programs and policies for mothers who are heads of households with children under six years of age, for whom they would have allocated a citizen income of 500,000 pesos per month.

He has also reported that they will recognize the work of women who “have taken care of children who are not their own, overcoming the lack of resources and providing affection”, for which he has announced that community mothers and substitute mothers who have cared for more Ten years old will receive an income of up to 1.1 million pesos (about 256 euros).

The president took the opportunity to talk about his projects and reforms. According to him, “women are a fundamental part of agrarian reform”, which is why “a special land allocation program has been launched aimed at empowering rural women.”

He highlighted the creation of the Ministry of Equality and Equity and highlighted the work of the vice president and minister Francia Márquez: «Colombia will advance considerably in terms of protecting women against gender violence, closing gender gaps and creating of opportunities for economic independence for women.

Finally, he has pointed out that the Government of Colombia has already decreed a national emergency due to femicides, which is why he has mentioned that the Ministry of Equality is working on the design and implementation of a system of registration, care, monitoring and follow-up of the gender violence.
