The Semmering race didn’t go as expected, but had extremely difficult conditions. Petra Vlhová made the podium once in two giant slaloms and one slalom, finishing second on day one.
Under normal circumstances the results could certainly have been better, but Vlhová was battling an illness that cost her a lot of strength. Ironically, she achieved the best result on the first day of the competition. The next day she was seventh and then fourth.
“It was a rather complicated three days. When we arrived she was ill, which cost her energy and strength. She did very well in the first giant, which surprised us, but probably the adrenaline helped.
In the second, we clearly saw that she lacked strength. She managed to make a breakthrough in the slalom, which is a good sign before Zagreb. Even on bad days, she’s close to the best. We continue to work, we know that Petra is not in top form like last year.” his Swiss coach Mauro Pini told the Slovakian skier.
What do you think he misses the most? “She lacks energy and health. My motto is that when the body isn’t in perfect condition, the mental side also pays off and we are in this situation, but we are working on it, we still have many races to do”.
After that, Vlhová will have the chance to return to the podium, or take her first win of the season, in two slaloms in Zagreb, Croatia (January 4 and 5). After transfer day, she will complete two giant slaloms in Kranjska Gora, Croatia (January 7 and 8), and again, after only one rest day, she will do one slalom in Flachau, Austria (January 9).
Before the busy season, the whole team has a few days off, they want to make the most of them. “In the next few days we will gather new strength, enjoy the end of the year and start training again”, Pini revealed.
