Petra lived in ruins for fifteen years: ‘I’m full of anger and I’m depressed’ | show

Help my husband is a handymanThe new season of Help my husband is a handyman! started with high ratings. The first episode showed how Petra and her husband Joop have been living in a heavily neglected house in Zaandam for fifteen years. More than 1.1 million viewers saw how not only their home, but also their marriage was collapsing.

Presenter John Williams (52) and his job team had a big job waiting. “Please, will you come and help me?” Petra asked John at the beginning of the episode. “It’s quiet here. I’m not asking you, I’m really begging you. I’m full of anger and I’m depressed because my house isn’t finished,” she continued. “It will kill me and so will my marriage.”

Petra and Joop’s house was a ruin. The toilet was never finished, the ceiling of the kitchen and living room was open, the kitchen was littered with clutter and the floor was half gone. Unlivable, you would think, but Petra has managed to keep it going for fifteen years now.

Until now. “My marriage really suffers from this, with arguments and reproaches. I have been promised a palace and I live in a ruin.” Her mental health was already suffering too much, she said. “This is a bit of the last straw, I think.”

Lost overview

Petra was convinced that Joop hadn’t done it all on purpose. After all, he is already old and had ‘lost the overview a bit’. That was also apparent when John visited him later in the episode. ,,I want to, but I don’t have the energy and strength anymore”, he said. Joop was only too happy that John and his team came to help him. “Really, I hope you help me. I am happy with everything. Thank you.”

Joop was not lacking in motivation, as it turned out when he and John thought about what they were going to do with the room next to the bedroom, which was still full of his electrical equipment. When John suggested turning the room into a craft room, he was so excited that he decided to throw all his stuff away and stop collecting. “So if you need another cord?” he joked. “All I need from you is this positivity,” John replied.

When Petra was allowed to view her new ‘palace’ after a week, she could not hold back her tears. She thought the house was ‘beyond beautiful’. A later visit from John revealed that their marriage had also improved. “We have completely found each other again,” said Petra. “We love each other and are talking again.”
