One of the best former soccer goalkeepers in the world continues to fulfill his hockey dreams. Petr Čech has become the new temporary reinforcement of the Belfast Giants, who play in the top British league EIHL
The 41-year-old Czech plays for the Oxford City Stars team in the National Ice Hockey League, which is one level below the Elite League.
But now it moves up a level! At least for a while.
Belfast, who also played in the Champions League this year and beat Dynamo, for example, introduced him as a temporary reinforcement on loan.
The Czech, who ended his rich football career in 2019, then set out to pursue his dream – he wanted to become a hockey goalkeeper.
Now he has the opportunity to catch in the top British league. And that’s quite a lot of progress! Even if he doesn’t catch the game, he will be a part of one of the best clubs on the Islands for some time.
“Petr is a highly regarded athlete who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level,” Belfast Giants coach Adam Keefe said.
“His assistance during this loan will be invaluable.”
“We greatly appreciate the help from the Oxford City Stars club and from Peter himself. His help during this loan will be invaluable,” he added.
The four-time Premier League winner or Champions League champion has already worn the Belfast jersey this year. It was in a charity match against Dnipro which raised £65,000 to support hockey in wartime Ukraine.
