Origin
Saint Petka, also called Bulgarian, was born in the town of Epivat on the Sea of Marmara in the 11th century. She led a pious life, and after her death her relics, which possess healing power, became a symbol of the struggle to preserve Christian culture from Islamic assimilation. Tsar Ivan Asen II took them to Tarnovo, where they were kept until its capture by the Turks. After long wanderings, the relics found rest in the Romanian city of Iași, where they remain until now.
On this day, the insemination of domestic animals, also known as sheep wedding or molting, usually takes place. In Christian mythology, Saint Petka is honored as the patroness of women and their domestic activities – spinning, weaving, cutting, sewing. In the region of Thrace around Petkovden, special sacrifices of black hens are known, called Kokosha Church, God’s Church, God’s Spirit, etc.
Customs
On Petkovden, cakes are kneaded, and the largest of them is named after St. Petka. The bread and the house should be sprinkled with holy water and the whole household should worship the bread three times. A ritual meal includes mutton, Kurban soup, stew with leeks, sarmi.
On the occasion of the holiday, on Saturday, the church of the same name in the village of Tsraklevtsi, Godechka parish, celebrates 100 years since its consecration. In the capital’s ancient temple “St. Petka”, Bishop Polycarp of Belogradchi will celebrate the bishop’s holy liturgy.
