Petition filed: Tesla’s unexpected acceleration is being investigated

The US traffic safety agency NHTSA is examining possible problems with the driving behavior of several models from the US electric car manufacturer Tesla. The agency responded to a petition citing more than 100 incidents where Tesla S, X, and 3 models are said to have accelerated unexpectedly. This acceleration could lead to accidents and injuries, the NHTSA announced on January 13, 2020 (PDF).

According to the document, the test affects around 500,000 Tesla models from the years of production 2012 to 2019. The corresponding petition was received by the NHTSA on December 19, 2019 and referred to 127 user complaints regarding 123 vehicles. The incidents resulted in 110 accidents with 52 injuries.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) first wants to check whether the petition is accepted or rejected. If an acceptance is accepted, an official defect investigation is initiated. The tesladeaths.com website also collects complaints about unexpected accelerations.

Operator error or software problem?

The NHTSA states in the document the user complaints mentioned in the petition. In complaint no. For example, 11282993 says: “On November 29, 2019, we were driving our 5-month-old Tesla Model 3. We came to a stop at a traffic light in heavy traffic when the car suddenly accelerated on my own. My husband suddenly had to brake to avoid a collision with another car to prevent.” The same vehicle is said to have accelerated unexpectedly two days earlier.

Another complaint with the number 11278322 relates to a Model S of the year of construction 2015. “After driving for 30 minutes in auto pilot mode at a speed between 105 and 112 km / h, the car suddenly accelerated without warning.” This caused a rear-end collision. Another complaint (number 11139174) relates to an unexpected acceleration when parking. According to the Reuters news agency, further complaints relate to parking processes that resulted in collisions.

According to US media reports, the NHTSA has also started 14 investigations into accidents in which the use of the so-called autopilot or other assistance systems may have played a role. Most recently, there were two fatal accidents with Tesla vehicles on December 29, 2019, which are being investigated by the NHTSA. A Model 3 drove into a parked fire truck in the US state of Indiana, while a Model S ran over a red light in California and collided with a small car.

On February 25, 2020, the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSB) also wanted to identify the likely cause of a fatal accident with a Model X in Silicon Valley. On March 23, 2018, an Apple employee raced with his Tesla against a so-called crash cushion and had a fatal accident.
