European institutions have been fighting disinformation for years. And every event or process that the European leaders do not like is explained by some hybrid attacks that come from Russia, China, Iran. With these words, Peter Volgin shook the status quo of public speaking in the European Parliament. The Bulgarian MEP pointed out that the European leaders put the blame for Brexit on the Russians, and the tendency for nationally responsible parties to win the elections in a number of European countries is also presented as Russian intervention. Any reasonable voice in Europe at all is defined as a “hybrid attack” and that is absurd. Any meaningful criticism of Brussels-imposed policies is automatically dismissed as “disinformation,” Volgin concluded. The reason for the statement of the until recently popular journalist from BNR MEP elected by “Vazrazhdane” part of the “Europe of sovereign nations” group is that debates are being held in the European Parliament on the subject of “External interference and hybrid attacks” and the need to strengthen internal security in the EU.
Referring to the US propaganda war between Democrats and Republicans, Peter Volgin gave the following example: “It is more than certain that if Donald Trump becomes the American president again, the “talking heads” in Europe will say that it happened thanks to the ubiquitous Russian hackers.” He went on to specify that while such untenable explanations are being circulated, top European leaders are saying untrue things that, if we are less delicate, we can call outright lies. “We remember Ursula von der Leyen saying that the Russian economy is on command breathing, and that the Russians are taking the chips out of dishwashers and refrigerators to fix their war machines. In fact, today the Russian economy is doing much better than a number of Western countries, the Russian army is winning on the battlefield, and Zelensky also wanted nuclear weapons.” the disinformation she used, but she was even elected for a second time as head of the European Commission. “I fully agree that the EU should fight against disinformation. It should especially actively fight against the misinformation that its own leaders are spreading.”
