Péter Szijjártó: the Israeli conflict must be avoided to become a war between states (video)

The international community must do everything in order to avoid the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, the most important thing is to succeed in preventing the outbreak of war between states, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said on Monday in Luxembourg.

According to the ministry’s announcement, the head of the ministry reported on the European Union foreign affairs council meeting and said that there is a strong division between the member states regarding the Israeli crisis. He emphasized that the government’s position is clear on this issue as well, according to which it is completely unacceptable and inexplicable if someone fires thousands of rockets at a country, causes the death and suffering of thousands of people, and takes hostages.

“Therefore, we consider it self-evident that Israel does have the right to defend itself. The European Union must stand up for Israel as firmly as possible, since Israel was hit by a terrorist attack,” he stated.

At the same time, we also think that the international community must make efforts to avoid escalation. If escalation is not avoided, the spread of the conflict in the Middle East could create a situation that could poison the life of the Middle East and the wider region for many years or even decades.

he added.

“The most important thing regarding the ongoing conflict in Israel is to manage to avoid this conflict from escalating into a formal war between countries, states, and armies. We hope that all members of the international community will behave responsibly,” he said.

He also touched on the importance of the security of the civilian population: they are in contact with all fifteen Hungarian citizens in the Gaza Strip, from which it is currently impossible to get out. “Of course, we believe that as soon as the physical, political, and legal possibility opens, they will be able to leave the Gaza Strip,” he said.

Péter Szijjártó warned that the weakening of the stability of the countries in the region must also be avoided, which is especially important in the case of those that are helping Europe in curbing migration, such as Egypt.
