Describing the completion of the construction of the Szent Borbála bridge as a milestone in the implementation of the national strategic program, Péter Szijjártó reminded that an important objective of the post-2010 government with national interests in mind was to strengthen cooperation with other nations, especially neighboring countries.
He pointed out: Hungary and Slovakia share the longest border section of 654 kilometers, which in 2010 could be crossed at only 22 places. However, in 2014 Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico signed an agreement to increase the number of border crossing opportunities.
Thanks to this, the Szent Borbála bridge is already the fortieth border crossing point on the border of the two countries, eighteen new border crossing points have been completed in fourteen years, and all the Ipoly bridges planned in 2014 have been built.
Péter Szijjártó called all of this a joint success story and indicated that Hungary is ready to continue the construction of new bridges, roads, and railway lines between the two countries. That is why they are eagerly awaiting the official visit of the Prime Minister of Slovakia to Budapest next Tuesday, which will provide an opportunity for further negotiations, he said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade recalled: when the electricity system and gas pipeline connection between the two countries were handed over, many people doubted their importance. However, today, when there is a war raging next door and the energy supply of the two countries is facing unprecedented difficulties, he already approves, he added.
