Although Peter Schouten initially writes to go to the shop for another tattoo, he also had the life motto of Peter R. de Vries put on his calf on Sunday: ‘on bended knee is no way to be free’. Peter R. also had the message tattooed on his leg. “It means that we are not subservient to anyone. That no one can dominate us. That means we are never, ever, anyone’s slave,” the late crime reporter said during a speech in 2016 about his tattoo.

‘Beautiful Peter! I’m actually not a tattoo person at all, but I’ve been thinking about it lately. Nice tribute!’ and ‘How beautiful is this! For so many different reasons.. wonderful,” it sounds under the message. “Goosebumps, emotion and beautiful tribute to your and our dear friend,” wrote another.
Peter R. often stated in interviews that he wanted to live in freedom and regularly underlined his father’s motto: ‘rather die standing than live on your knees’. Something so important to him, he even had a tattoo with a quote derived from it.

John van den Heuvel also shared a special message today regarding the murder of Peter R. and announced that he was slowly going back to work. “After a summer period of sadness, mourning, rest, reflection and recovery, the focus was back on work last week,” the crime reporter wrote with a photo of them.
‘It’s difficult with the realization that Peter will never be at the desk again and we had to move to another studio because of the threat. But we will continue with our work, just as Peter would like and do.’
