Peter Sagan’s Performance at Tour de France: The Reason Behind his 19th Place Finish

Gone are the days when we saw Slovakian cycling phenomenon Peter Sagan at the absolute top of mass sprints at the Tour de France. After the 19th place, the three-time world champion himself revealed why it was like that in the 3rd stage.

After finishing the 3rd stage, he was not disappointed with the result, but he was far from the self-confident and fearless Sagan as we know him from the past.

“Well, I guess my biological clock is ticking. It was enough, I almost fell twice and I say to myself, I don’t need to kill myself here. It doesn’t matter, that’s what sprints are,” Sagan told RTVS.

The 33-year-old 7-time holder of the green jersey has had several dangerous falls in recent weeks to win the points competition. The last one at the joint championships of Slovakia and the Czech Republic in Tlmačy.

“Before, we fought in sprints maybe six – seven. Now it seems to me that those who start the sprints are even more aggressive than the sprinters themselves,” stated Sagan.

He admitted that the final stages are dangerous. “I almost fell twice in the last kilometer. I managed it quite well, but when I tried to go forward, it licked there again, I saw myself falling again. That’s it… OK, it’s just a matter of getting there so it doesn’t fall,” added the vice-champion of Slovakia.
