Peter Sagan
Since Peter Sagan is not a time trialist, we cannot even expect him to attack the leading ranks in the opening stage of this year’s “Old Lady”. He will use the short track through the streets of Copenhagen to warm up before the weekend stages, in which he will have a better chance to show off the famous dynamite in his legs.

The tour will start with a short time trial through the streets of the capital of Denmark. The first 8.5 kilometers have few turns and long straights, which will favor the absolute strength of the best time trialists. The timepiece will be the most technical since the world-famous statue of the Little Mermaid from the fairy tale of the famous Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. The organizing agency ASO wanted this technical pass in particular, because it did not want to miss a well-known monument.
In the last two kilometers, cyclists will pass the Danish Parliament building and other important buildings. There will be a 90-degree turn in the last kilometer and the finish line will be right next to the city hall. Here, 11 years ago, Mads Würtz and Luke Durbridge became world champions in the junior (Würtz) and under-23 (Durbridge) categories. They are both at the start now and will certainly be among the faster cyclists, but they do not belong to the circle of favorites.
The biggest ace to win the first yellow jersey of the 109th Tour is the Italian Filippo Ganna. The still only 25-year-old cyclist riding for the British Ineos is a two-time world time trial champion and won another domestic title in this discipline a week ago. This year, he did not win the time trial just once, when Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-EasyPost) beat him by seven seconds at the UAE Tour, but he would need a few kilometers longer time trial. At a shorter distance, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) or Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) will have a very difficult time against Filip Gann.
According to many experts, the only real challenger is Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma). The Belgian all-rounder came with the goal of winning the green jersey, and a triumph in the time trial would guarantee him, as a bonus to winning the yellow jersey, the green and decent points allocation compared to the sprinters.
