The Tour de France is at the end of the second block and there is still a typical transfer stage before the last free day. It could culminate in a mass sprint, plans can be ruined by a strong leak. The terrain is giving way to a group of daredevils and we could see a similar scenario as two days ago with the triumph of Mads Pedersen.
Only two categorized 3rd category hills do not look intimidating, but in practice you will still be riding in rugged terrain. The stage is classified as flat, but the 2,416 meters of elevation suggests it won’t be an easy day in the saddle.
It will not be easy for the sprint teams in Sunday’s profile and they will face a tough shift. After two weeks and hard days in the Alps, not only the sprinters themselves, but also their colleagues have tired legs. When controlling the escape, they have to think about their fast-footed leaders on the climbs, because the high pace will take away their strength or they don’t stay in the main group.
If the sprinters were to get to the front under the last hill premium of the day with an escape within range, they will not be able to breathe. The Cote des Cammazes is up to 5.1 km and has a gradient of 4.1%, and for fast men it represents very difficult minutes. In addition, the road becomes quite level up to the 189th kilometer. After the ascent, the road rises a few meters higher and a series of short descents and hills will follow.
The road becomes completely flat 13 km before the finish line. However, this may already be too late for the grouping of sprint teams. From the fifth kilometer before the finish line to the last, it’s a straight line. On the last thousand meters, you will go up slightly, you will climb 15 meters to the finish line.
The Alpecin-Deceuninck, BikeExchange-Jayco and Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl teams are in the hands of whether the sprinters will have the opportunity to win. They are expected to control the race from the sharp start.
