The twelfth and royal stage promises a big show. Not only does it have nearly 4,700 meters of ascent and three tough climbs, but it’s on July 14th, when the French celebrate their biggest holiday, Bastille Day. On this special day, local cyclists have extra motivation and we will definitely see a few of them on the run.

It’s a public holiday in France, so the climbs will be absolutely packed with people. Right from the start, the Col du Galibier is climbed, but for a change from its easier side. Cyclists will thus return to the road where they rode the day before. They will climb along the descent route from the previous day and descend where Primož Roglič and Jonas Vingegaard joined Tadej Pogačar several times on Wednesday.

After the Galibier, cyclists take a long descent to reach the lowest point of the stage (536 m above sea level). The second ascent of the Hors catégorie Col de la Croix de Fer will start from it. This hill has an average slope of “only” 5.2% due to its thirteen moderate kilometers and also the descending passages. However, the introduction and conclusion are steep enough for a significant selection to take place in it.

After a steep descent and a flat in the valley, the cyclists come under the last climb of the day. Alpe d’Huez and its legendary 21 switchbacks on almost 14 kilometers are back after a four-year hiatus. The organizers expect half a million people on the hill, who will create an electrifying atmosphere and only add charge to total cycling.

An identical stage was run in 1986, when teammates Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond reached the finish line together. Geraint Thomas, Thibaut Pinot and Christophe Riblon won the Alpe d’Huez in the recent past.

14 years ago, Peter Velits shone in the stage with the finish in Alpe d’Huez. He was on the run all day, won the HC premium on the Col de la Croix de Fer and became the first ever Slovak cyclist in history to win the mountain premium on the Tour de France.

The most difficult stage of the Tour de France comes on the 12th race day, and the cyclists go to it after the previous brutal test, where no one was spared. The overall order will be decided definitively only after the time trial, but time is running out for the purebred climbers. After the Alps, there will be only five mountain stages and one hilly one with a steep finish.
