When it was clear that Peter Sagan would not be missing at this year’s joint championships of Slovakia and the Czech Republic in road cycling, the clouds of doubt dissipated, which some spread in connection with his positive test for coronavirus after the penultimate stage of the Around Switzerland race.
Fortunately, Peter Sagan himself, even though he had no symptoms of the disease, which twice sent him to bed in in perfect condition, did not even doubt from the beginning that he would come to Mladá Vožice for the joint championship.
The judge who monitors the situation knows that if he was not aiming for the eighth title of champion of Slovakia, he would not even travel on roads near Tábor. Anyone who knows its maximalist nature knows that he had a clear goal. True, anything can happen in almost two hundred kilometers, and in a second the hopes are gone. Fortunately, nothing like that happened, Peter fulfilled in his typical way what he traveled to the joint championship.
He tried to drive as far forward from the beginning as possible so as not to come into dangerous contact with any opponent, he watched especially his opponents from the Slovak part of the peloton and in the second half he clearly set the pace for the whole peloton. He stretched and tore the groups to conclude only those who did not endanger him as a result and, in particular, not too much effort to obtain his scalp.
Therefore, the questions that the new champion of the Czech Republic, Matej Zahálek, received in the goal that the value of his victory over the three-time world champion sounded a little absurd. The current format of this event represents two separate competitions in one peloton, so Peter Sagan could have had a hundred Czech cyclists in front of him, because for him the triumph among the Slovak part of the starting field was a priority.
In any case, the triumph in Mladá Vožica also gave him the necessary self-confidence, although he did not compete in the peloton, which traditionally meets at the World Tour. He certainly pleased his fans, who went to him even to a more distant venue of the championship, as usual, a lot.
He sent them, but also all those who kept their fingers crossed for him at home, a very clear message that he should be reckoned with at the Tour de France, that he will try again, this time from Danish, Belgian, Swiss and French roads, to send home only good news…
