The accident happened approximately at the 140th kilometer of the 273 km long route. Bahrain Victorious rider Filip Macejuk tried to get around the peloton on the edge through the wet grass, where he hit a pothole and knocked almost half of the peloton to the ground while trying to get back on the road. The Polish cyclist was subsequently disqualified from the race.
“It was quite a nasty fall, I fell on something sharp because I tore a muscle and I haven’t been able to extend my leg properly since. In addition, I found my bike destroyed without a saddle, so I had to wait a long time. I continued, but I could no longer go full speed, I also had a loss, so logically I withdrew, because in a week we have Paris – Roubaix. I hope to be fine in two or three days, hopefully the leg will heal,” said Peter Sagan in an interview for RTVS.
