People who had switched on the subtitles via Teletext received a slightly different text. It said: “I was in Maestro, The Smartest Man of course, and at Jinek may I come and chat about the royal family.” And just after a clear ‘cut’ in the image, it sounds: “Just a little longer and Peter R. de Vries will have to start worrying.”
Recordings
The recordings of The smartest person are not from today, but recorded a while back. After the attack on Peter R. de Vries, the KRO-NCRV decided not to broadcast this joke. However, the subtitles still went wrong.
The broadcaster reacts against Show news as follows: ‘We did not think it appropriate to leave the reference to Peter R. de Vries in the episode and have therefore removed it in the broadcast of Tuesday 13 July.’

Peter R. de Vries was shot in Amsterdam last Tuesday on the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat, shortly after a broadcast of RTL Boulevard. The crime reporter was seriously injured in the shooting incident. He is fighting for his life in the hospital. Police arrested three suspects soon after the incident.
