Peter Laviolette Appointed Head Coach of the New York Rangers

The New York Rangers organization made a major announcement on June 13, 2023: Peter Laviolette was appointed as head coach.

At the age of 58, the American technician now has six NHL teams under his belt in his role as head coach.

Before joining the ranks of the Rangers, Peter Laviolette was at the head of the Washington Capitals, a team with which he was able to register an impressive overall record of 220-115-78. However, the Capitals recently announced that Laviolette would not be returning for next season, paving the way for his arrival in New York.

It should be noted that the rumor had circulated that Patrick Roy, the former goaltender of the Montreal Canadiens and the Colorado Avalanche, was approached for the position of head coach of the Rangers. However, the organization’s choice ultimately fell on peter Laviolette, a coaching veteran with a long track record.

Peter Laviolette’s career in the NHL is marked by memorable moments. The highlight of his career is undoubtedly the 2005-2006 season, when he led the Carolina Hurricanes to victory in the Stanley Cup, in seven games against the Edmonton Oilers. He has also enjoyed success with the Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers – with whom he reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010 – and New York Islanders.

Peter Laviolette is no stranger to the Boston Bruins either. He began his coaching career under the Pat Burns era with the Bruins in 2000-2001, as an assistant.

As a former defenseman, he also has some familiarity with the Rangers, having played 12 games with them in the 1988-89 season. This past experience with the team could certainly benefit him in his new role.
