Peter Bogdanovich, director of The Last Show, has died

The American director and actor Peter Bogdanovich, who became famous in the early 1970s as one of the representatives of the so-called New Hollywood, died at the age of 82. The artist’s death was reported by the AP and The Hollywood Reporter, citing his daughter. He died this morning at his home in Los Angeles, said Antonia Bogdanovich.

Peter Bogdanovich was born in 1939 in the US state of New York, his father was a Serbian painter. At the age of 12, he began keeping a file of his views on every film he saw, The Hollywood Reporter recalled. At the age of 16, he studied acting with the legendary Stella Adler. He started as a film journalist and critic, eventually becoming a film director.

From the beginning, he was considered a director with a strong author’s handwriting, writes AP. Bogdanovich thrilled the audience and critics with the melancholy black-and-white film The Last Performance in 1971, which won eight Oscar nominations, two of which he won (for supporting acting roles). Two years later, he made Paper Moon, which was also praised by the adaptation of Henry James’ novel Daisy Miller in 1974.

Later, the tabloids also became interested in him, due to an affair with model and actress Dorothy Stratten, with whom he made the film And Everyone Laughed (1981). Stratten was married and her husband killed her and himself. And in 1988, Bogdanovich married Dorothy’s 20-year-old sister Louise, whom he had been dating since she was 14. His affair with actress Cybill Shepherd when he was still married to Polly Platt was also known, the AP recalls.

Bogdanovich has also had an acting career. Among other things, he played a small role in Quentin Tarantino’s film Kill Bill.

“It simply came to our notice then. I’m devastated. He was an amazing and great artist, “director Francis Ford Coppola responded to the news of Bogdanovich’s death today. “I will never forget the premiere of The Last Show. I remember at the end the audience jumped around me and a round of applause broke out, which lasted for 15 minutes (..) May he enjoy the excitement of our round of applause forever, “he added.
