Four people died after the Tesla burst into flames after hitting a utility pole.

The incident happened around 12:10 p.m. local time in November, when the electric car carrying five people was traveling at high speed, Inspector Philip Sinclair of the Toronto police said at a press conference, quoted by the Telegraph, Vesti said .

The car lost control, hitting a guardrail and a concrete pillar, after which the car burst into flames. Four passengers – three men aged 26, 29 and 32, as well as a 30-year-old woman – died at the scene. The only survivor, a 25-year-old woman, was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Sinclair said no other vehicle was involved in the accident, and the investigation is continuing. Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessup noted that the possibility that the intensity of the fire was related to the vehicle’s battery cells is being considered.

The surviving woman was saved thanks to 73-year-old Canadian postman Rick Harper. He happened to be at the scene of the accident and noticed that other people who were passing by were trying to break the rear window of the car, but to no avail. Harper used a metal crowbar from his truck to break the glass, which allowed him to pull the woman to safety.

According to the passenger’s account, the Tesla Model Y’s electronic doors may have been to blame for why passengers were trapped inside the electric vehicle.

“We couldn’t open the doors,” lifeguard Rick Harper told the Toronto Star in a new interview. “I believe the young lady would have tried to open the door from the inside because she was desperate to get out.” Harper said he did not realize there were others inside because the fog so thick.

“She came out quickly, head first. You could see the fear in her eyes,” said Harper. He said that at first no one suspected there were other people in the car because the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

After the rescue operation, Harper returned to his normal duties, not fully aware of the magnitude of the tragedy. “I was shocked when I later learned that four people had died,” he said, adding that he was told by investigators that the rescued woman was recovering in hospital .
