/ world today news/ The announced proposals for changes to the Constitution, garnished with an express change of the national holiday from March 3rd to May 24th, are a real disgrace. This was commented by the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament, Petar Vitanov, after today’s press conference of “We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria”.
“The idea that March 3 is not a national holiday is not only another ugly attempt to severely divide our nation, but also shows ignorance. Because Bulgarians, Russians, Ukrainians, Romanians, Finns and thousands more of our worthy ancestors fought side by side for the freedom of Bulgaria. March 3rd is the date that marks the resurrection of the Bulgarian state. Perhaps the authors of today’s idea do not know that in 1951 March 3 was declared a “remnant of Great Bulgarian chauvinism” and was canceled by the Labor Code. All countries in the world designate as their national holiday the day on which they received their freedom and independence. Because this is the most important condition for the existence of a country,” comments Petar Vitanov.
Behind the idea of changing our national holiday, other attempts for a total replacement should probably be hidden, the MEP believes.
“Behind the proposal of the term of office of the mayors, the intention of representatives of the so-called “new parties” to win ex officio. And at the moment we have a number of cases in which local feudal lords do not run personally, but launch their relatives or business partners. What will this frankly lobbyist amendment change,” he further asked.
Limiting the powers of the caretaker government speaks of ambitions to usurp all power.
“Unfortunately, the current coalition cannot accept that caretaker governments continue to have a higher rating than the current one.” In the way the changes are being proposed, I expect another important change to be made soon – the cancellation of the elections. Amendments to the Constitution concerning the judiciary are also aimed again against the president and to take away his right to issue decrees of appointment and dismissal of the presidents of the Supreme Court of Cassation and the Supreme Administrative Court. And if in three years the president is from the right – will there still be changes to the basic law? And all this without public debate, without discussion in the legal community, between magistrates, non-governmental sector,” he added.
“This attempt to completely change the agenda of the Bulgarians is being made in the height of summer, when the media mainstream is busy with the price of steaks and umbrellas on the beach. On the days when Bulgarians try to rest and see their families before they get caught up with their usual worries – work, sending the children to school, loans, bills, taking care of parents and relatives. I hope the record heat will not put our people to sleep, because the most criminal experiment in recent years is underway,” concludes Vitanov.
