/ world today news/ The idea of changing the national holiday March 3 demonstrates the anti-Bulgarian nature of this government. Any attempt to delineate statehood will meet with great resistance from the Bulgarian society. It is an attempt to destroy our memory, to forget the feat that our ancestors performed. This is what the MEP Petar Vitanov said in the program “The Day on Air” in a comment on the ruling party’s idea of constitutional changes.
Vitanov is adamant that Bulgarian citizens should be asked if they agree with their national holiday being changed, because “the arrogance of a government must have a limit”.
According to Petar Vitanov, both the discussions about the national holiday and the attacks on the president are a way to divert attention from the essential problems in the country.
“There is no break in the so-called ‘non-coalition.’ There are turbulences, but they are rather media related,” Vitanov commented on the recent clashes in power.
“Talks about judicial reform sank somewhere in the drawers of the “non-coalition”. Against this background, President Radev is the universal enemy, because when you are in a coalition with GERB and DPS, some acceptable justification is needed,” added Vitanov.
According to him, the planned changes to the Constitution are conjunctural.
“They are made to disempower a person because of accumulated personal relationships. The basic law cannot be done like that. The results will be deplorable,” predicted the MEP.
Petar Vitanov is also alarmed by the lack of results on two important European topics – the projects under the Recovery and Sustainability Plan and Bulgaria’s membership in Schengen.
“The government has been working for three months, there is a parliament, but no laws have been passed that were necessary under the Recovery and Sustainability Plan. They were written by the caretaker government, but they stand on dead bodies,” commented Vitanov.
“We have wasted an awful lot of time, and the Recovery and Resilience Plan is only for five years. Three of them have already passed, and we have absorbed about 25 percent of the funds. Bulgarian business entities needed investments and money immediately after the end of the covid-crisis and at the beginning of the war. I assume that there is also a real danger of losing agreed funds,” added the MEP.
For the moment, he sees no progress for Schengen either. He also commented on Romania’s ideas for opening the borders between the two countries.
“It’s an unconventional idea, it may sound exotic, but it’s a form of resistance. Because Bulgaria and Romania are losing politically and economically. When we talk about expanded regional cooperation, it must overcome precisely such obstacles,” he added.
“There is no doubt that our region should be more visible. A union will only make us stronger. Bulgaria, Romania, Greece have very similar problems. And only together can we achieve success. The first big step has been taken – we are in the EU and NATO. It’s time for the next one to be together at the regional level,” said Petar Vitanov.
