/ world today news/ The leader of the Bulgarian left should be prime minister, the MEP believes
“The Congress of the BSP must initiate a significant change in the BSP. Only in this way will people’s trust in the left be restored.” This was said by the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP, Petar Vitanov, who is also a member of the National Council before the BNR.
“The BSP Congress should usher in a different path for the party to restore confidence. We had a historic low in the elections, we became the fourth power, and this indicates that a change is absolutely necessary, which should not only be personal, but also ideological,” said Vitanov.
According to him, the BSP should rethink its identity.
“Change will come after raising the important questions for a progressive left party – about wealth redistribution, progressive taxation, corporate tax, huge inequality, environmental issues. Not just to accept the Green Transformation, but to see who will foot the bill. Will it go to the working poor or will it go to the big corporations. Last but not least, we must talk about gender equality, the fight against violence, because because of the Istanbul Convention, we forgot this issue that is so important to left-wing people. Along with new ideas, we must also have new faces to articulate them,” said Petar Vitanov.
“Probably Ms. Ninova will win the direct election, but the more serious issue is the public verdict of the voters,” added the MEP.
“It seems to me that right now we are cultivating future members of “Vazrazhdane” because we are inciting them with anti-European, nationalist and anti-vaxxer rhetoric. This repels the moderate and more democratically inclined left people,” said Vitanov.
And his appeal ahead of the Left Congress on Saturday is for the whole party to come up with new ideas and unite.
“The leader of the BSP must be the prime minister, he cannot be a golden finger in the coalition, and this is done by returning the trust of the voters as well. This is the way – no quarrels, no divisions, no persecution of members who think differently,” said Petar Vitanov.
The representative of the Socialists also commented on the Bulgarian state visit to Skopje.
“I would like to pay attention to two pieces of news. One is of a more bravura nature – the opening of an airline line between Sofia and Skopje. There was such a line, but it was closed not for political reasons, but because of the lack of economic interest. The second is about the name – we accepted the abbreviated Northern Macedonia against Skopje’s note that there are no territorial claims. This was the first and most easily achievable condition for Bulgaria. But the Macedonians have always used this as a bargaining chip, so it is important to see how we proceed,” Vitanov believes.
According to him, a good foundation has been laid for the talks to solve the real problems and lead to an agreement between the two countries, so as to unblock the issue of North Macedonia’s accession to the EU.
“I am not enthusiastic, because we have looked at a “new beginning” at least four, five times already, but some dialogue is still starting,” concluded Petar Vitanov.
