Petar Vitanov: Taxing excess profits in energy can give people and businesses a breath of fresh air – 2024-02-28 12:22:27

/ world today news/ Taxing the excess profits of companies that accumulate millions in energy can give people and businesses a breath of fresh air. The development of nuclear energy in Bulgaria will make our country independent and guarantee stability in the markets. This was said by MEP Petar Vitanov during a lecture in the framework of the final course of the National Program “Management Skills” of the Bulgarian School of Politics “Dimitar Panitsa”.

In the midst of the energy crisis, everyone is asking who is to blame and whether the European Union is wrong to insist there is no backtracking on legislation related to the Green Deal.

“We cannot close our eyes to the obvious climate changes that we witness every day in different parts of Europe and the world. Because before the floods in our country, our continent became a victim of permanent drought, which dried up the biggest rivers – Rhine, Po, Thames, Loire, Danube. Not only was shipping disrupted, important ecological systems were also affected. In Sicily, the thermometers showed over 50 degrees, and in Great Britain – 40,” said Petar Vitanov.

On the one hand, the war will force Fit for 55 legislation, but on the other hand it will modify some of the energy transition intentions, even because many of the ideas so far have been related to the use of gas, which proves an impossible task, the socialist believes.

“Europe needs strategic autonomy regarding the natural resources it extracts and consumes. It is important to create a sustainable strategy for own extraction of raw materials in the territory of the Union together with the industry. Only in this way will we be able to guarantee independence and security in the future, as well as a smooth energy transition that does not occur at an unbearable social cost,” said the MEP from the Group of Socialists and Democrats in the EP.

“The inclusion of nuclear energy in the taxonomy that defines it as a green and sustainable investment means that capital markets can invest in precisely such projects,” he added.

According to Petar Vitanov, if Bulgaria can be partly calm about the fact that there will be electricity in the winter, this is mainly due to the capacities of the Kozloduy NPP.

“Nuclear power is a permanent, weather-independent, low-carbon source of energy at affordable and lower prices. Nuclear power is the only carbon-neutral baseline energy power that can guarantee stable electricity for European citizens and industry.

Against the background of the energy crisis, a number of European countries have reconsidered their policy on nuclear energy, it is time for Bulgaria to decide whether it will build a new plant, in what terms, with what investments, in order to guarantee an energy future for people and businesses,” said Vitanov. .
