/ world today news/ BSP did everything possible to realize a government with the third mandate, but now there is only one move – elections. This is what Petar Vitanov, the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP, said in “The Day Begins” on BNT.
“We have an energy, inflationary, political crisis, not to mention a constitutional crisis. Delaying the return of the mandate can cause all kinds of interpretations about the BSP’s intentions,” said Petar Vitanov.
According to him, the selection of the head of KEVR should be decided by lawyers and this procedure can also be started faster. They must say whether, if there is no legally elected chairman, the previous one remains, as happened in the case of the BNB, or whether an urgent change in the law is possible, with which the deputy can temporarily take over the functions of the chairman.
“BSP did everything possible to realize the third mandate, even more, but obviously there is no possibility of forming a new government and the procedure framed by the Constitution should be followed,” the MEP also said.
Petar Vitanov also drew a parallel with Italy, where Mario Draghi’s government fell, three days of consultations with the president followed and an election date was set for early September.
“In Italy, they forced the elections in order to solve the problems with the budget, inflation, gas supplies,” said Vitanov.
The MEP commented on the European Commission’s call for the countries of the community to voluntarily reduce their gas consumption between August 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023 by at least 15% compared to the average levels of their consumption in the last five years. The measure is voluntary, but could become mandatory if Brussels declares a significant risk of gas shortages.
“After the EC’s proposals to reduce gas consumption came out, many countries expressed their reservations. And the reason is simple – we have different countries, with different specifics, some of them are very dependent on Russian gas, others less so. However, the Bulgarian position on the subject is missing,” commented Petar Vitanov.
“The representatives of the gas association claim that this seems unfeasible for our country. And it really sounds impossible to say to certain businesses or entire sectors – you’re not going to get more gas. Not to mention “Toplofikatsia Sofia”, which consumes a third of the country’s entire consumption,” added the socialist.
He also focused on the new REPOWER EU energy strategy, which is worth 300 billion.
“It is good that gas and energy investments have been declared green because they enable the construction of new base capacities. This step will allow private capital to be released and directed to similar projects,” Vitanov said.
Regarding the Recovery and Resilience Plan, Petar Vitanov reported that it is not clear which laws need to be changed, but it is even more worrying that none of them have been tabled for discussion.
“For example, more than 1 billion have been earmarked for energy efficiency. However, we do not know what it includes, who has the right to apply, before which authority. These are all questions that have not been clarified,” said the MEP.
