/ world today news/ Processes in politics disgust people and erode trust in parties and their leaders. BSP should not stay in government at all costs, but think how to win the elections. Attacks on the president by the party leadership are a “mud fight”.
This was said by Petar Vitanov, head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament and member of the National Council of the BSP, in the “Democracy” show with Petar Volgin on TV1.
“In recent days, the National Assembly looks like a Chapel Bazaar. After all that has happened, I wonder who in the future will want to be involved in politics or even participate in the electoral process. I am sure that if there are elections in the coming months, the activity will be very low”, commented Petar Vitanov.
According to the socialist, even if the government gathers the necessary support and overcomes the vote of no confidence, difficult days lie ahead for the ruling majority, which “will tremble for the quorum every day.”
“I have witnessed such fragile majorities. They mean, in practice, to amputate part of the work of the National Assembly. All international activity, participation in delegations ends. You can’t lose a single deputy when the quorum hangs in the balance at every meeting,” Vitanov fears.
According to him, there are two options – either the current administration unites around a new figure, such as the former chairman of the National Assembly Nikola Minchev, who won the sympathy not only of those who support the majority, but also of a part of the opposition, or to go to elections.
“Before that, the budget should be adopted to give a breath of air to the people who are really in a very difficult situation because of the galloping inflation,” Vitanov said.
“This is the most important topic at the moment. I don’t want to talk about the BSP as the National Rifle Association of the USA. Let’s constantly listen to how the socialists sell weapons or how the heads of the Defense Ministry or “Kintex” change. I want to talk about left politics. I want the BSP to be remembered as the party that helps the vulnerable, that gives the social answer, that talks about inequalities, that talks about a fair tax system, about progressive taxation,” said Vitanov.
The socialist was adamant that he did not want the return of the old government, which the Bulgarian citizens expelled.
“I don’t want GERB and DPS to return to power, or Vazrazhdane.” Even last year, I was against a coalition with the party of Slavi Trifonov, when this issue was discussed at our National Council, and then many socialists were surprised. But for me, this project was a cat in a sack,” Vitanov said, but added that GERB also said years ago that the elections were not a good thing and would throw the country into chaos.
“We, as the BSP, must tell the voters how we will win the elections and why they should choose us. And in this sense, it seems abnormal to me that the BSP leadership speaks in one voice with the so-called “urban right” which has been our opponent for the last 15-20 years and at the same time fighting mud battles with the president. The president has a consistent position,” said Vitanov.
Staying in power at any cost will bring negatives to the BSP, the socialist also believes.
“If there is a possibility of a sustainable government, the left must be in it, but if there is not, it will just be a prolongation of the agony – a month, two, three.” And whoever stays in it the longest will suffer the biggest negatives,” Vitanov added.
According to the MEP, BSP has no way to explain that it is not colluding with GERB and DPS if it votes for the return of the paper ballot.
“What the return of the paper means – 600 thousand invalid ballots. I don’t think our voters should be underestimated. “Most socialists are intelligent people, and the suggestion that they can’t handle machines sounds even insulting,” commented the socialist.
The BSP will look different if it offers new personnel, new policies and a new organization.
According to Petar Vitanov, the left should talk about a fair tax system, about working conditions, about the increasing differences between the poor and the rich.
“The longer we stay in impossible situations, the harder it will be to pull ourselves together and the task will become like collecting rice with a boxing glove,” concluded Vitanov.
