Petar Vitanov: If someone in the BSP thinks of forming a disguised coalition with GERB, “Positano” will seem narrow to him – 2024-02-26 10:28:54

/ world today news/ I don’t think we are getting close to forming a government. The discussions in the National Assembly are very far from the real problems of Bulgarian society. Moreover, they also alienate the few people engaged in the political process or excited about politics. This was said by the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP, Petar Vitanov, in the program “The Day Begins” on BNT.

“The subject of flash drives is unsustainable to say the least. The manifestations of the BSP leadership look like an attempt to seek justification for the election results two months later. I cannot accept that the elections were falsified to be given to GERB. Some say that voting is not done with machines anywhere in Europe, but in Europe there are no more than ten percent invalid ballots, nor votes bought for 20 euros each,” said Vitanov in response to a question about the scandal with possible manipulations of the machine vote.

Asked how he sees the dialogue between the parties in the current situation, Vitanov announced that a possible merger of the BSP with GERB is unacceptable. “In Bulgaria, we had a struggle with GERD for years. And if someone in the BSP thinks that with the third term he can form a disguised coalition with GERB, “Positano” will seem narrow to him.

The socialist also commented on the latest developments on the subject of Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area.

“I remain optimistic because so far some of the worst scenarios have not come true. A declaration was expected in the Dutch Parliament, which was supposed to separate Bulgaria and Romania. Apparently we managed to thwart her. What we had to do in the European institutions – the Parliament and the Commission – has been done”.

The MEP is convinced that Bulgaria deserved its entry into Schengen by all criteria. “This was also confirmed by the last mission organized by Bulgaria and Romania, with experts from over 15 countries. Moreover, our border policemen die to guard the European border. And if anyone believes that the situation with migrants here is worse than on Lesvos or Lampedusa, they are sorely mistaken. Yes, there is an influx problem, and that is exactly why the resource has been drawn from the internal borders to the external, to be more effective in protecting the borders of the Union. Of course, there is a need for an even higher degree of European integration when a war is being waged 250 km from our border.”

Vitanov also explained his reasons for voting against the European Parliament resolution, which declared Russia a “sponsor of terrorism” and was adopted almost unanimously by European MPs last week.

“We all know who is the aggressor and who has invaded foreign sovereign territory. When you define someone as a terrorist, however, it means that you cut off all possibilities for peace negotiations. The declaration itself calls for the restriction of all diplomatic contacts. Yes, we believe that Ukraine should restore its territorial integrity. This can be done in two ways – either the way of war or the way of negotiations. In my opinion, the peaceful path should not be neglected, especially when timid attempts are being made even by the US to engage in dialogue with Russia. A way must be found to reach a diplomatic solution and that should be the role of the EU. Because we provided such an opportunity to Turkey, and yet the EU is a project of peace”
