Sofia, April 25, 2017 – “60 years ago in the EU, the spirit was greater than the body, and now, unfortunately, it is the opposite. Politics has turned into accounting.” This was stated by the MEP from the Group of Socialists and Democrats in the EP, Petar Kurumbashev, during the International Conference “Where is Europe Going: Globalism vs. Populism”, which was held at the “Sofia Hotel Balkan”.

Kurumbashev also shared that he did not imagine that the EU could be managed so badly, but look so good, and that he did not expect that retrograde Mercury and in general – the retrograde – would have such a big impact on Bulgaria.

“I also did not imagine that one of the countries that invited us to the Union is currently leaving it,” Kurumbashev commented in response to a question posed by Solomon Passy – “Which three realities today would sound the most incredible for you in 2005?’

According to Petar Kurumbashev, in 2027 the EU will not be in its current form. “It is very unlikely that Britain will apply to return to the EU,” he added.

“I am surprised by the fact that we supposedly support democracy, but we don’t like referendums,” commented Petar Kurumbashev. “I also remind you that the referendum in Turkey was organized by President Erdogan, and in our country – by Slavi Trifonov.”

The MEP took part in the conference organized by “PanEurope Bulgaria” with the support of the State Cultural Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Bulgaria, the EC Representation in Sofia. It is held under the patronage of H.V. Simeon of Saxe-Coburg. It is attended by Prime Minister Prof. Ognyan Gerdzhikov, Prime Minister of Bulgaria (2001-2005), Vice-President Iliana Yotova, Petar Stoyanov, President of Bulgaria (1997-2002), Wolfgang Schüssel, Chancellor of Austria (2000-2007), Alain Terenoir, chairman of the International Pan-European Union and Ognyan Zlatev, head of the Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria, MEP Geoffrey van Orden.
