Interview Gregory René: pei birds crowned world champions of a pet bird competition in Italy
22 countries and over 20,000 birds competed in Naples, Italy. There were four categories: exotic birds, posture canaries, colored canaries and hooked beaks. Grégory René had a checkerboard capuchin, called coutil or toulite. It is the beauty of the birds that prevailed. Birds are judged on their color, their posture. “What made the difference is that we’ve been doing local competitions for 40 years, it’s a legacy, there’s a long-term preparation”, assures the president of the CER. To select his birds, Grégory René scrutinizes all the details.
“Winning this prize rewards all the hours spent with these birds, I have no words, it’s the holy grail, we are on cloud nine. The birds traveled 10,000 km to go to Italy, and made honor to Reunion. It’s gratifying!”exclaims Grégory René.
This is not the first time that Grégory René has been crowned world champion. The CER president won a title five years ago, again in Italy. He has three gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze medal.
There are many breeders on the island but few dare to participate in competitions. “Long administrative procedures, and the financial side hinder breeders”explains this bird enthusiast.
