The Czech national team for the first time in history lost in the regular season with the Danes and entered the Olympic tournament in Beijing with an unpleasant defeat, which significantly complicates the efforts to directly advance to the quarterfinals. Coach Filip pešán did not look for excuses, but he stood up for his team.
Beijing (from our correspondent) – The miserable period of Czech hockey players continues even under five circles. “It is no longer a coincidence,” said Filip pešán in the bowels of the national stadium in the Chinese capital.
The Czechs scored the first goal. They haven’t been able to take the lead once this year.
In Beijing, the ideal scenario for a perfectly defensively organized Danes was unfolding right from the start.
“The first goal we scored was exactly what we should have scored. To block, to push three players into the gate, and then there can pass even a shot that does not have goal parameters, ” regretted the coach.
Another important part of the game plan ended in a mess: helping yourself with power plays.
Immediately in the first Czechs fell, Jakub jeřábek made a mistake on the blue and had to foul the escaping Danish opponent for a penalty shoot-out. The Danes have doubled their lead.
“For the psyche of our power plays it was a big blow. When you lose 0-2 to Denmark, it’s very hard. This has been confirmed, ” said Peshan.
His wards significantly outshone the opponent, but the whole duel they struggled with poor productivity.
“I do not want to evaluate the number of shots, because it is never an indicator that I would take somehow extra seriously, but we also had more chances than the opponent,” he described.
Only captain Roman červenka hit the top corner after great work by Jan Kovář. The reduction came right from the beginning of the second part, but no turnover took place. The Czechs were toothless.
“We were getting into positions where our shots should end up in the net, but whether we were nervous or … I don’t have an explanation for that. In the laid-out chances, we again finished so that we did not give a goal.”
The Danes took their chance and showed what they are. A tenacious team that has been together for a long time is played. And he has long known ways to get the Czechs into big trouble.
“You saw for yourself that the Danes were throwing pucks, beating them on plexiglasses. Unfortunately, that was enough. They played very selflessly, they have big men in defense. They did not let us into the pre-fight area, which was also one of the keys of the match,” praised the Czech coach at the limit of the possibilities of the fighting rival.
But he also had words of appreciation for his team. A bad result for him could not overshadow some of the positives.
“It’s shortly after the game, so I don’t want to make any big remarks here. It’s unpleasant, of course, but I must say that the guys did not leak anything. Not a second, ” he stressed.
“The team lived and did everything for the result. Unfortunately, this is hockey, and even though I think that we were better than the opponent in that match, we did not win, ” he added.
“It is a complication in terms of direct procedure. On the other hand, we knew before the start that if we had ambitions to advance from the group, we needed to beat both the Swiss and the Russians. Nothing changes about the plan, ” concluded the coach.
