PES leaders discuss European minimum wage – 2024-09-10 02:01:15

/ world today news/ “The most important topic for us is to guarantee an investment policy in Europe that creates new jobs and decent incomes.

That is why we have been fighting for the last 5 years and we are starting to achieve results – both with the Youth Guarantee, which should be extended to cover people up to 30 years old, and with the EC’s investment plan. It should be operational by summer. Faster changes are needed to give hope and decent incomes to people in the EU, incl. and in Bulgaria”.

This was stated by PES president Sergey Stanishev in Madrid, where a meeting of the leaders of the political family formations will be held this weekend.

Measures to guarantee a decent income for Europeans will be discussed there, the main issue being the introduction of a minimum wage in the member states of the Union. The second main topic of the forum is anti-terrorist actions after the situation in Paris and Copenhagen.

“Strengthened cooperation is necessary to guarantee people’s security,” Stanishev said. According to him, one of the threats to the EU is the “Islamic State”.

“For the first time near Europe, we have a medieval caliphate that challenges the principles of the EU,” explained Stanishev.

Today, the PES leader started a series of meetings to raise the issue of Bulgaria’s entry into Schengen. “There cannot be a single security space in the EU while Bulgaria and Romania are outside Schengen,” Stanishev added. He said he will not stop raising this question because it is only fair for our country. “Bulgaria in Schengen is a national cause,” Stanishev said. According to him, both the government and the opposition should defend it.

The President of the European Parliament (EP) Martin Schulz and the Socialist European Commissioners will be present at the forum, which officially starts tomorrow.

Stanishev spoke with the leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, Pedro Sanchez, with whom he discussed the upcoming local elections in May and the possibility of support from the PES. “Our ambition is for the PSOE to win this vote. Our meeting tomorrow in Madrid with the leaders of the parties of the European social democratic family is in support of the Spanish socialists because they can make the changes in their country both economically and socially. With Mr. Sánchez, we planned for the PSOE to host a major forum in April in Barcelona on regional and local politics, which will also be attended by the mayor of Lisbon, as well as other joint events,” Stanishev concluded.
