“Pervasive Stigma: New Data Reveals Harsh Reality for People with Mental Health or Substance Use Disorders in Canada”

According to new research released for Mental Health Week in Canada, over 2,000 people with mental health or substance use disorder experience persisting stigma. The research found that 95% of respondents have experienced stigma in the past five years, whilst 72% have admitted having negative stereotypes of themselves. Up to 40% of participants also reported receiving discriminatory treatment in healthcare settings. The findings shed light on the ongoing challenges individuals face across Canada, with a lack of access to services, preventive mental health services and stigma reduction being key areas for improvement. “Stigma remains a significant barrier” for people with these issues, warns Dr. Keith Dobson, Professor at the University of Calgary.
