Peruvian post-impeachment conditions of President Castillo Page all

LIMA, KOMPAS. com – A thousand demonstrators marched through Lima demanding the acquittal of the impeached president, Peter Castillobefore the police broke up the demonstration with tear gas, he made several arrests.

“Peter Castillo, Peru with you!” and “If there is no liberation, there will be revolution!” chanted the leftist supporters.

Reported by AFP, Protesters in the cities of Ayacucho and Puno in the southern Andes, where Castillo has strong support, are calling for early elections.

Castillo’s vice president, Dina Boluarte, was sworn in shortly after the impeachment vote, promising to serve the remainder of Castillo’s term, until July 2026.

The 60-year-old lawyer is now to form his first cabinet of ministers, which will be an early sign of his tenure.

However, without his own political party in Congress, Boluarte faces an uphill battle to stay in power.

“He has no party in Congress, he is alone,” former Peruvian president Ollanta Humala told local television on Wednesday evening (7/12/2022).

“He doesn’t have the tools to govern, he has to call early elections,” added Humala, in office from 2011 to 2016.

“Today’s ceasefire will last a month or maybe more, but then the country’s big problems will surface,” he added.

But right-wing political heavyweight Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former President Fujimori, said her party would back the new president.

“We hope the president appoints a large and excellent cabinet and we should all do everything we can to make it work,” he tweeted.

The United States praises Peru for ensuring democratic stability and the European Union expresses its support for a political, democratic and peaceful solution adopted by the Peruvian institutions.

Castillo was placed in temporary detention on Thursday (12/10/2022), a day after he was ousted by lawmakers and arrested on charges of organizing a coup.

Prosecutors raided the presidential office and several ministerial offices to find evidence against Castillo, who is being investigated for rebellion and conspiracy.
