Peruvian Police Raid the Presidential Palace, What’s Up?

Police Peru together with local prosecutors raided the Presidential Palace in the capital Lima in an effort to arrest the President’s brother-in-law peter castle. Yenifer Paredes who is Castillo’s brother-in-law is being investigated for alleged cases corruption and money laundering.

As reported AFP, Wednesday (10/8/2022), the attempt to arrest Paredes failed. After searching and searching for nearly four hours, police personnel and prosecutors left the Peruvian Presidential Palace without finding Paredes, who now appears to be a fugitive.

The raid was an unprecedented police operation, and came after the local prosecutor’s office requested a ‘raid’ of the ‘government palace residence area’.

Paredes, 26, lives with Castillo and his family in the presidential residence in the Peruvian government palace complex.

Judicial raids were also carried out simultaneously in several other locations in Lima. Jose Nenil Medina, who is mayor of a city in Chota Province – Castillo’s home region, as well as businessmen Hugo and brothers Angie Espino, were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the same corruption case.

A Peruvian court granted permission for the initial 10-day detention of those suspected of involvement.

Paredes was previously summoned to testify before local prosecutors and was summoned to appear before a Peruvian Congressional commission in mid-July. The local prosecutor’s office has opened five investigations into Castillo, who has also been swept up in corruption charges.
