Peruvian police have arrested a man for putting a mummy in his cooler bag to “show it to his friends”.
Police stumbled upon the discovery when they searched the man for behaving strangely while visiting an archaeological site in the southern city of Puno.
The man called the mummy “his spiritual friend” and even gave her a name: Juanita. He kept her in a box next to the television. According to the man, the mummy belonged to his father. He could not tell how his father had come to the body.
Experts say the mummy is between 600 and 800 years old. It is probably a man who died at the age of about 45. The mummy was wrapped in bandages in the fetal position, which is typical of pre-Hispanic burials in the area.
The police confiscated the mummy and handed it over to the Ministry of Culture. The man who transported the body was arrested along with his friends. The twenty-somethings are being held and possible crimes are being investigated.
