Peruvian representatives have tabled a motion to impeach President Dina Boluarte. Large-scale protests have been going on in Peru for weeks over the impeachment and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo.
The motion was signed by at least 20 left-wing MPs who support Castillo. According to the motion, Boluarte is unable to perform her duties. But the motion will not be officially discussed until it is approved by 52 votes. It is not yet known when it will be voted on.
Boluarte called for a national ceasefire on Tuesday. She tried to put an end to the unrest and demonstrations in the country. She said she wants “dialogue, peace and unity”.
Her call made no difference. Protesters continue to demand her resignation in the streets. They are demanding new elections and the release of former President Castillo.
Boluarte came to power in December last year after the impeachment of her predecessor. Castillo is very popular among the native people of the country and immediately took to the streets after his impeachment. Castillo wanted to prevent a vote of no confidence in December by dissolving parliament. He was then arrested.
Boluarte said earlier this month that she could not meet the protesters’ demands. “The only thing that can be done is to bring the elections forward. We have already proposed that,” said the president.
Violent protests have continued for weeks. The demonstrators destroy cars, set fires and often clash with the police. It uses tear gas, among other things. At least 39 people have been killed in the protests. More than 70 people were injured.
