After almost six years with New York City FC, the Peruvian Alexander Callens left MLS to continue his career in Spain’s LaLiga with Girona, team with which he signed this Monday and in which he will be for the next two and a half seasons.

After finishing the recent American football season, the Peruvian central defender ended his contract with New York City, a club with which he has been since 2017, to return to football in Spain where he has had experiences with Real Sociedad and Numancia.

At Girona, which is part of the owners of NYCFC, the City Football Group, will meet again with the Argentine Valentín ‘Taty’ Castellanos, with whom he shared in the New York team until mid-summer of last year.

Alexander Callens leaves North American soccer after being champion of the ‘MLS Cup’ in 2021 with New York City. He was also a candidate for the MLS best defense award in the 2017 and 2021 seasons.

With NYCFC he participated in 161 matches in all competitions and scored 11 goals.

Luckily for Girona, the international with the selection of Peru, will not occupy an extra-community position since he has Spanish nationality due to all the years he lived there while on the aforementioned teams.

He spent four seasons with Real Sociedad in which he played 86 games, all in Second B (subsidiary)., while with Numancia he spent two seasons in the second division, where he played 39 games in. During his time in San Sebastián he made his debut with the first team, in a Copa del Rey match.
