After having been away from music for a while, Christian Meier (53), the Peruvian actor who unleashed passions at the end of the 90s with the soap opera Luz María, returns with a new album, He’s back home. Quite a declaration of intentions from the actor, who sat down with SEMANA to give us his first interview in Spain after this break.
You return with your fifth studio album after a long hiatus of almost 20 years. Why this absence?
20 years ago I went through difficult times. Suddenly one of the guys in the band passed away, that left me with a big void and I decided to stop until I had passed through the mourning. At that time I decided to dedicate myself to my work as an actor without thinking that it was going to demand more and more of me. It was a snowball that did not stop until 2020, when the pandemic arrived.
You became an international actor thanks to soap operas.
Yes, but that success somehow prevented me from putting down roots, settling down, and being able to open myself up to the possibility of having a stable partner.
And that’s why the album is called that?
Exactly. In the last five or six years I returned to writing music, enjoyed my family more and met who is now my wife. And I said, this album should be called I’m Back Home.
An album that, by the way, I think you wrote entirely during the pandemic, right?
Of course, when you find yourself alone at home locked up, I think that each person’s instinct and DNA begins to emerge. It’s almost like an act of survival. I started writing songs again and at the end of the pandemic I decided to go back into the studio, record again and turn everything into an album. These new songs speak of the mature self. I have reviewed the last 15 or 20 years of my life and I have reflected them in each of the topics.
Is it true that you have already finished your foray into the world of soap operas?
Nine years ago I came to the conclusion that I had nothing more to contribute to this genre. I think I already fulfilled. She left behind some memorable works, thank God, such as Luz María. But you have to know when to leave the party.
That soap opera broke records in Spain.
It’s true. There she hit very hard, but also on the other side of the world. So yes, we don’t have to feel bad.
And what do you want to convey now with this album?
I think it’s an album that sounds a lot like me. It’s melodic pop rock in Spanish. It is a genre where I feel immensely happy and comfortable.
When will you return to Spain?
Next year I hope to be there and pay you a visit in the editorial office.
