He Government of Peru and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) signed in Lima the contract for the delivery of a loan for up to US$700 million to execute a large drinking water and sewage project in the city of Juliaca, in the southern Andean region of Puno, official sources reported.
The external debt contract was signed in a ceremony held this Wednesday at the Government Palace of Limaby the Peruvian Vice Minister of Economy, Juan Pichihua, and the IDB representative in Peru, Ezequiel Cambiasso.
Also attending were the Peruvian president, Dina Boluarte; the Minister of Housing and Construction, Hania Pérez de Cuéllar; and authorities of Juliaca, a city in the Puno province of San Román located more than 1,260 kilometers from Lima.
Boluarte assured that this work will begin in 2024 and will benefit more than 480,000 inhabitants of the urban areas of Juliaca, after which he maintained that his government is “unlocking works paralyzed for years due to corruption.”
Cambiasso highlighted, for his part, that, reaching up to 700 million dollars, this is the largest loan granted by the IDB to Peru in more than 65 years of relationship.
For her part, Minister Pérez de Cuéllar indicated that the work will allow the residents of Juliaca to have modern water and sanitation service “as they deserve” and “live in decent and healthy conditions.”
In turn, the mayor of the province of San Román, Oscar Cáceres, said that “this project will provide health, quality of life and well-being to the population, and, above all, it will be ready in 2026, when Juliaca turns 100 years of creation.”
The Ministry of Housing detailed that, of the total credit commitment, 350 million dollars will be used to partially finance the project to expand and improve drinking water and sewage services in Juliaca.
The work includes the construction of a Drinking Water Treatment Plant (PTAP) with a capacity for 1,450 liters per second, nine reservoirs, a collection system for 1,600 liters per second of water from the Cabanillas River, more than 80 kilometers of water networks and more than 30,000 water connections.
401 kilometers of secondary sewer networks, 73 kilometers of collectors, 16 pumping chambers and more than 23,000 home sanitation connections will also be installed.
